PMC 2640 gets played against a real human opponent!

I was pretty excited about PMC when I finally got my hands on it a few months back. I wrote my introductory battle report on it after doing a solo run simply because I had to...but I finally got my first "real" game in last night.

I decided to forgo my usual note taking and just enjoy the flow of the game for once. What Im going to present here is a series of pics with ultra-quick commentary, and then give a few more thoughts on the game itself.

Here is our battlefield as it shapes up and forces are chosen.

I had to introduce the mechanics of the game in and amongst the descriptions of the unit stats and what they meant - fortunately my opponent was a veteran and picked it up quicker than I would have liked him to!

We played an easy Tier 3, Priority 1 battle. Left to right:
4-man Tier 3 Rocket team
3-man Tier 2 LMG section
6-man Tier 3 LMG team (one member is being interrogated by the enemy, but managed to escape in time for the battle)
4-man Tier 4 sniper team
Tier 3 Light combat vehicle
8-man Tier 3 Rifle team

Honestly, as I was deploying, I thought the red thing in front of me was a hill...heh oops! :)

We played a Capture scenario, where we had 20 turns to contest 3 objectives: the 2 watch towers and the low, flat grey block in the center (it was VITAL, I swear it!).

Deployment as it is shaping up:

My opponent was fielding a version of the Slammers, with 3x Tier III Grav Combat cars, some mortars, scouts on grav sleds, and quite a few Tier I rifle teams.

His models were pretty cool. Here are his Combat Cars and Scouts.

The game starts, and he starts flanking to my left with his vehicles. I snake my way towards the center with my Light Combat Vehicle. His grav sleds rush up and pull their first Markerlight designation, which immediately brought mortar fire down from the other side of the map. Fortunately it missed.

The rules for buildings were really easy, but we had packed them in so densely that the only things really maneuvering where the vehicles (his to hunt, mine to evade).

You can see his tanks sneaking around to my left. I felt I was secure in the buildings - my snipers had Gauss weapons which gain a +1 vs vehicles, and I had a lot of faith in my bazooka team, but the snipers never got to cover before they were pounced on...and this was their quick and inevitable end:

(Hint: 1 guy, with a modified Morale of 1, with 12 Suppression markers....he wasn't long for the battlefield! [He fled the next turn])

My bazooka team didn't fare much better, either, taking lead from fire hoses at near-point blank range, which ended up being too close for them to arm their own rockets. To make matters worse, you can see the smoke billowing from the center - my light tank took its final demise from small arms! That's right - at point blank range from an angry mob, even assault rifles can finish off light armor, which was scary to contemplate!
On my right, the LMG team wasnt doing much better. They slogged through cover for two turns, and when they popped out, took some crazy-accurate fire from some rookie gunners across the way, and spent a few more turns cowering under cover.

They finally had had enough of being pinned down on the right flank, and decided to make a mad dash in a vain effort to redeploy and aid their ailing left flank.

It was a futile gesture. The Combat Cars kept coming, while mortar fire continued to rain into the Bazooka team. The tank at the bottom of the pic here wiped out a few more of the redeploying LMG team and sent them right back into the woods.

It was getting late, and with the all-but-complete destruction of my bazooka team and my LMG team pinned again, I called it. We made it 5 turns, and it was a complete route. I killed a few scrubs with my central Rifle team, but really didn't return effective fire on any front. Here is the outcome:

Finally, satellite imagery confirmed the conflict's result:

So, I had a blast even though the game was over almost before it began. I knew Aron would be bringing vehicles, but I put my points into small, more veteran units. I think he did it right, as the firepower from his tanks was almost always a 9, and only rarely a 7 - brutal in such short environs. He proved that Tier I troops might not be glamorous, but their effectiveness was plain to see. The few I hit did break nicely, but he rallied against long odds and kept them on the table.

Actually, come to think about it, his dice were hot when they usually aren't, so it was good to see luck back on his side. There was nothing atypical in this game - it had its ups and downs, but no single roll or action seemed out of place.

The game is, indeed, a fast-play ruleset. I'll borrow some of my opponent's words as he described it our local group, since he was seeing it with fresh eyes:

"It plays well, quick play set a bit like slammers but not as crunchy. Simple force building, with this "tiered" structure you may have read about. So no custom options but with a bit of imagination I was able to do slammers combat car platoon supporting some local irregulars.

I'd rate this 8/10
Slammers & StarGrunt 9/10
Tomorrow's War 7.5/10 for the complexity.

There is a Mordheim-like campaign system. So that could be fun. I'm going to get the printed rule book.

I like this better than Gruntz."

Of course, YMMV but this came together nicely. There are a few things that could be a splash more crunchy, but then it would lose a bit of its ease of play. Indirect fire, for example, had no scatter, but we realized that this would require a template, which the author stayed away from. The combat is pretty streamlined.

Next time we play, we hope to do two things to make referencing easier in-game. First, combat cards for each unit, instead of a roster. Similar to Malifaux or other similar games, we'll need to design these, but that shouldn't be hard.

Second, we think a chit or token with the unit's Morale stat on it would be a huge help, especially if it could be written on with a wet erase or grease pen. The chit would follow the unit around the board, in a similar vein to Dirtside tokens. For the purist, it might clutter up the board, but we were already using blast markers. That, combined with a small card, would make pulling up numbers in-game that much more quick.

Again, "factor factor factor" comes up a lot in the game, but the modifiers are so straight forward as to be quite simple.

This game is a winner. There are so many unit types premade that exploring them all will be part of the fun. Not being greedy and sinking all my points into smaller, elite units will be hard to resist, but this game values concentrated fire, and all units seem to have a purpose.

Hello, Maurice here.

I’m going to run the mysterious Praesentiafor this project.  I hope I can hit all my deadlines, and I hope you enjoy following along.

When I was deciding on a faction for Critical Mass, I knew I wanted something alien (I have so many human 15mm figs to paint for other games, I needed something different).  ARC Fleet was too human.  Protolenes were already taken, and Kaamdos just didn’t strike me.  That left the Praesentia.

Hello, Maurice here.  I’m going to run the mysterious Praesentia for this project.  I hope I can hit all my deadlines, and I hope you enjoy following along.

(Photo credit to CMG, hosted earlier on Dropship Horizon)

Now, the Praesentia are apparently an ancient race of ETs that use the ancient arts of The Way, The Path and The Balance in combat.  Of course their legions of subjugated robots help as well.  The Praesentia army is rather unique, with only a few actual Praesentia (pictured above), surrounded by various specialist robots and drones.  They also make extensive use of teleportation.

So, where to start?  I initially picked up a Battleforce, which contains a Praesentia Command Trinary, the commanders of the force, two units of Enlightened robots with Trinary command, 3 Guardian drones and 3 Sentinel Drones.  Since then, I’ve added a unit of Phase Shifters (teleporting close-assault robots) and two of the heavy Hyperion Drones.

Taking weapons add-ons, orbital strike, comms and other additional costs into account, that gives me something close to 1,500  points.  Now to get it painted and on the table!

A 300 Club Campaign

Current 15mm Ventaurans from Eureka Miniatures

Hi Guys,

As some of you may have noticed I am trying to get a few more Ventaurans made by Eureka Miniatures via their 300 Club, see the link http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=329977 I have received some interest and so far I have six backers and one hundred and seventy pre ordered miniatures secured. This has taken about two months and as I have mentioned on TMP at the rate we are going we will never get to have the extra Ventauran’s produced before we all reach retirement, so I’ve contacted Nic from Eureka Miniatures and to help things along he has agreed that if I can find ten backers and get four hundred pre ordered miniatures secured he would agree to have them made.

Now comes the favour that I need to ask you guy’s, would it be possible to post up a short news paragraph informing the 15mm community that do not visit the TMP what I am trying to achieve? Obviously the more 15mm gamers that hear about this opportunity the better it will be so were better to inform the masses but on the Dropship Horizon blog. We now need four more backers and two hundred and thirtyish pre ordered mini’s to make this happen, I hope you can and won’t mind helping me out in this matter.

Many thanks,

Zac

Titanium Dropship 2014 - Prizes

Thanks to a metric crap-load of trouble in my professional and family life, I've run out of time to properly interview each and every sponsor like I intended and managed to do with GZG in between my kids being sick and myself being toilet-ridden for days! With the end of the contest a bit more than two days out, I'll have to  stick to just present the prizes generously offered by most of the industry manufacturers! Deepest apologies about all this.

I've though somewhat on how to distribute prizes among the 9 winners (3 per category). With so many different sub-genres and styles, I didn't want to give anyone a 1st prize I deemed more desirable while the 2nd or 3rd prize would fit better with his existing collection. So I just divided the prizes in 9 similar lots, and will let the winners pick the lot they want.

The order of choosing will be:
  • Best entry of the category with the most entries
  • Best entry of the category with the second most entries
  • Best entry of the category with the least entries
  • Second best entry of the category with the most entries
  • Second best entry of the category with the second most entries
  • Second best entry of the category with the least entries
  • Third best entry of the category with the most entries
  • Third best entry of the category with the second most entries
  • Third best entry of the category with the least entries
Am I making some sense here?

So without further delay: the prizes...

Prize 1

  • A set of 4 sci-fi cars, a "classic" sports car, and a new Drive Armor (all of them yet to be released) by Darkest Star Games.
  • A 20 USD gift card to be spent on Rebel Minis products.

Prize 2

Prize 3

  • A Duxis Battlesuit bundle 1 and a Duxis Battlesuit bundle 2 by The Ion Age. That's 8 of their newest battlesuits (3 close combat and 5 ranged combat ones, 2 pilots, 2 drones and one fallen battlesuit)!
  • A BTR 290 RUSK APC and an infantry pack from Armies Army.

Prize 4

  • Yet to be released (and revealed) miniatures by 15mm.co.uk: namely a Charger APC vehicle, a pack of SFA Elite Troopers, a pack of SFA Jump Troopers and a pack of SFA Jump Sergeants.
  • One copy of Robbin Fitton's Gruntz.

Prize 5

  • A brand new Raven-Class VTOL and a squad of Hell Divers special forces to go with it, by ClearHorizon Miniatures.
  • One copy of Robbin Fitton's Gruntz.

Prize 6

  • Two squads of Crusaders and their Ailthean Light Tractor and two squads of Coftyrans and their Chyweethl Light Tractor by Zombiesmith.
  • One copy of Robbin Fitton's Gruntz.
  • One MDF Landing Craft (Tank) and one MDF 16x8 Student Condo by Mad Mecha Guy

Prize 7
  • A section/platoon of 3 unreleased tanks (2 if super-heavies) by Brigade Models.
  • One copy of Robbin Fitton's Gruntz.

Prize 8
  • A platoon of yet unreleased ARC Fleet Advance Walkers by Critical Mass Games.
  • One copy of Star Army by Two Hours Wargames.

Prize 9

Yes, that's more than 500 EUR, more than 400 GBP or nearly 700 USD worth of prizes. But that's not all...

GZG Special Prize
As stated in his interview, Jon from GZG will choose an entry using miniatures he manufactures and offer a special prize on top of its regular contribution to this contest!

The Ion Age Special Prize
Similarly, The Ion Age will throw in an additional "wee" surprise to any winner that uses Ion Age miniatures

That's all we have for now! Go back to painting, you've got two days left to try to win one of those prizes!

Previews of the Upcoming Khanate Warlord

By Eli

A bit of a tease this week from the folks at The Ion Age.

Slated for late Spring, these giant humanoids will be bringing some major firepower to the Khanate side of your tables. A selection of different head, body and weapon options are planned for these bruisers. All in metal. As you can see in the image below, they will definitely keep the Duxis on their toes.

You've got just under five hours left to submit your entry/entries... So far I've got 30 entries (14 squads, 13 vehicles and 3 pieces terrains), I sure hope to see some more coming in before midnight (UTC)!

But what's next?

Chance are I'll be fast asleep when the last one comes in. So far, I've uploaded the entries already received and will add tonight bounty to it. Then I'll invite the three judges (David "Dwartist" Woods, Steve Dean and  Robbin "Gruntz" Fitton)to review them and come up with the three best out of each category. That's lots of though calls to be made so I expect this to take a couple of days at least. And once the winners are known, I'll start publishing the entries (all of them) and contacting the winners (in the previously discussed order) to invite them to choose a prize which will be send directly to them by the sponsors offering it.

Stay tuned!

The Muster Khamel Track Bike

By Eli

Another creative and evocative design from the folks at Ion Age, the Khamel track bike provides a little motorized support for the modest Muster troopers. This model set will be released later this month and will be available both single and in packs. For more read - HERE.

Personally, I really dig this design and can see it making its way onto a lot of tables Ion Age and otherwise. Without the gun, it would make the perfect vehicle to roll around a colony or the outback of some alien world. Painted in industrial colors it might be a corporate or industrial vehicle. I can even see it hauling light trailers full of alien ore.

Armies Army BTR 290 Out of the Bag

By Eli
BTR 290 advances with RUSK forces. Image from Armies Army
I've had a hold of the BTR 290 for some time, but I have to admit, I wasn't sure if it was just a sneak peak copy from a friend in the industry or if I was allowed to go ahead and review the thing. Well, a bit of a nudge from Keith over at Armies Army told me otherwise and so here I am.

With the vehicle ending its pre-order phase and about ready to come out, now seems as good a time as any.

For those of your who are not yet familiar with the vehicle, the BTR 290 represents an interpretation of a future development of the current day BTR series of wheeled vehicles used by the Russians. The lines, details, and weapons have been updated to reflect that future battlefield presence but the overall feel of the vehicle is still familiar and instantly announces its intentions as a future Russian style vehicle.

Parts
The kit itself comes in ten (10) parts. A single piece, resin-cast hull, single piece resin turret with attached gun and eight (8) identical road wheels. I have displayed half of the wheels flipped over so you can see the nice, deep, clean sockets they have for fitting onto the robust posts molded into the BTR's chassis.

Materials and Casting
The resin is a good quality. It has more of a plastic finish than some of the more ceramic feel sorts I've run into. the finish on the model is crisp in the details with a sort of an intentionally rough finish, as if the vehicle had some sort of special coating. This finish does not seem to mar any of the details which remain crisp. The pre-production version I received has a substantial piece of resin under the barrel that is not part of the gun and seems like a molding channel to make sure the resin ran the length of the barrel.

The wheels of the model are all metal, cast in a good quality pewter with sharp details including hi-tech hubs on the wheels and a deep chunky tread on the tires. As mentioned earlier, the back side of each wheel features a deep socket designed to fit snugly over posts sculpted onto the suspension. The posts and their associated holes are so robust, I feel these will offer plenty of anchorage for glue and make these wheels stay on after plenty of games.

Conclusion
Overall, I feel this is an excellent model, especially considering it was the first one designed by Keith for Armies Army. The style is obvious in its intent and there is no confusing where this vehicle belongs. It's a great supplement for any future force of Russians, regardless of which line of miniatures your infantry come from.

15mm Sci Fi Clearhorizon Miniatures Review

For those of you who are interested in 15mm Science Fiction miniature gaming, there is a relatively new company called Clearhorizon Miniatures run by Mr Harold from the Dropship Horizon Blog. Currently the miniature line is very small, but he has plans to expand it and has put out some amazing products so far. I also have to say that Harold's customer service is very good and he ships his product as soon as possible. That being said, he does seem to 3rd party his casting and molding so there can be some delay if he is low or out of stock of a product. He does however let you know about these delays instead of leaving you wondering like certain miniature companies out there.

Onto the products!

15mm "Hell Divers" Infantry:

These seem to be designed as a special forces unit that specializes in rapid insertion missions.  I feel like they have a ton of character with very nice sharp detail.  They are definitely on the more slender side of 15mm miniatures, but match up height wise with the larger 15mm companies out there.  This does make them seem rather small at times from a distance.  They have an optional backpack that gives them that added character you don't get with most 15mm minis out there. Currently you can buy an Alpha squad and a Bravo squad, which essentially is a 12 man regular armed unit, or a 6 man special weapons squad.

For those who care, I will be using these in Gruntz as an Elite unit that consists of 6 gruntz, 1 SAW and 1 AT attachment to make a squad of 8.  Each of my platoons will be 3 squads, with one squad swapping out the AT weapon with a sniper.

Would definitely like to see more command options.

15mm Drop Pods:

I think it is safe to say that there really is nothing like this kit out there in the 15mm market right now. I have to admit that at first I was skeptical as to how interesting this kit would be.  I think my first picture shows how beautiful this model really is and how much flavor it actually has for essentially a box that falls out of the sky.  The model itself is cast very well with very few air bubbles and nothing major.  There are definitely some fiddly parts to the model and the smaller pieces do need some cleaning and trimming to actually fit properly, but well worth it in the end.  You can also glue the outer doors shut if you want.

I do feel like this model requires a base as it is rather fragile without one which could be a downside.  No open doors internal doors is also something to note, however I do think that it would be very difficult to cast one with that feature without redesigning the entire model. Overall I enjoy this model a lot, I don't think pictures can really do this model complete justice.

Note: This model brings out my inner child as I constantly make imitation thruster noises as I crash my model through the atmosphere and land it on the table deploying its cargo.  Just ask my friends...

Harold currently has 2 different VTOL attack craft, the Raven and the Sparrowhawk.  I won't go into extreme detail on the differences of each one, but will kind of lump up my thoughts about both into one review.

The casts are pretty clean for resin with little to no air bubbles just like the Drop Ships. There is of course some clean up to do and some mold lines will need to be filed, but nothing too extreme. One thing that I really appreciated was that when I did find a noticeable air bubble, it was actually filled with a modelling putty of some sort and filed down to match the model. I think this is very important to note as not only does it show that Harold inspects his miniatures for defects before shipping them, he corrects those defects that would possibly make a customer disappointed in the purchase. The smaller pieces could have been cast or molded differently to make them easier to clean, but I think they are good enough to where most people won't complain.

Both of these VTOLs are pretty sizable. Not sure if you can tell by my cutting board, but the Raven is roughly 5 inches long and the SparrowHawk about 3.5 inches. They have some pretty solid detail and they dry fit pretty well.

I am pretty happy. I usually hate resin models due to the casting flaws, but these are really nice. I would like to see some sort of flight stand that could be bought with these models. I am not very savvy when it comes to making my own flight stand, but this is really nit picking at this point and would definitely be a logistical burden on Harold's part to provide them.

Packaging:

This might not be important to the majority of customers out there, but something has to be said about packaging. I would honestly say that Harold packages his model in a more professional manner than just about any other 15mm Company out there. Usually you get a little baggy with a permanent marker tag denoting what item code the model inside is. The full color tags on the bags are really well done and definitely make it easy to identify what you have ordered. As I said, most customers won't care about this little touch, but I do think it shows just how passionate Harold is about his miniatures. You will also find a few business cards and some nice full color print outs of rules for the miniatures if you plan to play the game Gruntz which I would highly recommend (but that is for another post).

Hope you enjoyed my review. This is a company I would definitely recommend.
